What is scratchboard?

Scratchboard is an etching art form where an artist scratches away a black ink or clay layer to reveal a white or colored layer underneath, creating an image through subtractive drawing. The process involves using a sharp tool to remove the dark surface, with the density of the scratches determining the tonal values and highlights of the artwork. This technique is used to create detailed, high-contrast illustrations.
